What would you do if your first day at school involved a life-or-death tightrope walk over a deadly drop?

In this episode, we’re diving into chapters 1–4 of Fourth Wing, where we meet Violet—a dragon rider candidate with either the worst luck or a death wish (still undecided). We break down her nerve-wracking parapet walk, Christian has a lot of feelings about the practicality of combat boots on a ledge, and we can’t stop talking about her intense, overbearing mom. Oh, and let’s not forget the school dynamics, where “orientation” apparently means “try not to die.” And then there’s Xaden—mysterious bad boy or walking red flag? You decide. It’s all danger, drama, and spicy tension, and we’re just getting started.

(Transcribed by TurboScribe.ai. Go Unlimited to remove this message.) Welcome to Pillow Talk and Paperbacks. The podcast where a husband and wife tackle romanticy books when dramatic chapter at a time. I'm Mary Angelica and I'm all in for an epic love story. And I'm Christian here to question every life choice these characters make. We're here for the plot twist, the chaos, and a whole lot of laughs. All after wrangling our three boys to bed and finally claiming the couch for ourselves. So get cozy, grab a book, and let me remind you why none of this makes any sense. This is Christian. This is Mary Angelica. And this is the podcast where we try not to get divorced over romanticy novels, books, whatever we want to call them. Yeah, so I've read a few books in this genre and I'm obsessed. And I've been wanting to talk to my husband about them and he doesn't want to listen. So I convinced them via a podcast. Yeah, I kind of still don't want to listen, but I'm doing this for her because I'm committed husband. And I got to say, we're starting off pretty strong with fourth wing, which is a book that Mary has been obsessed with. I'm obsessed over for a little bit now. And I don't I didn't get the appeal. I maybe I still don't. So what have you read so far? How many chapters? Well, I've gone up until I finished chapter four. Okay. Yeah. So what we're going to do today is we're going to kind of walk through each chapter. He's highlighted things along the way in the book that he obviously has something to say lots of thoughts about. And so I'm going to kind of recap some things as we go through the chapter. So in case you've read this book and you maybe haven't seen it in a long time, then you know, you can kind of remember like, Oh, yeah, that's what happens in chapter one. And then you can know what we're reacting to. It's a little bit hard if you haven't read it in a while. So yeah, and I'll just want to start by a couple of things in the front of the book before we actually get into the first chapter. There is a map that they provided at first. I was like, why don't I want a map like I'm never going to go back to this map and reference it like 10 times because I have no idea where they are. And they keep talking about these different, you know, quarters or different places within the college. So I had to go back a few times. And then I read this warning. It's what I call it. It's like a disclaimer. It's like, you know, there's graphic language and sexual activities. And when I read the warning disclaimer, I was like, you know what, I do want to read this. Now I'm intrigued because there's poisoning. What does it say? Blood, intense violence, brutal injuries, death. Yeah. And I was like, that's my kind of book. Did you expect that to be what this book had? Not as much as I think they're making it out to be. We'll see. I mean, it's a war college. They've been a war for 400 years. So we'll get into that very soon. So we're in chapter one. It starts with something called conscription day, right? And it says it's always the deadliest. And in here, you know, we know that this is first person. So we're getting everything from the perspective of the main character. And she does say here, like, this is what six months of intense physical training has given me the ability to barely climb six flights of stairs with a 30 pound pack. And I was able to relate. And that's why that section is highlighted because, you know, we used to live in a condo and we had those fire alarms go off. To be fair, it was 18 stories that we had to go up and down. So maybe even better shipped in violet. Maybe I would make it through, you know, through this conscription day. I mean, she was just climbing the stairs to her mother's office. So, you know, yeah. Okay. So we talk here about how there are, you know, thousands of 20 year olds. So they're all 20 year olds that are waiting. Outside to enter their chosen quadrant. So they have to choose a quadrant they're going into. And they're the smartest and strongest in the bar. Yeah. And I'm glad I can relate to the age as well. So that'll be great because I know exactly what what they're going through. Living out your 20s. Yeah. One thing I want to call out also is I don't know where all these names come from. I wish it would have stuck with like Jessica and Mark and John and Paul, maybe the Apostles, just to keep it easy. Those are the whitest names. Yeah. And I'm bringing this up because I will butcher a lot of these names over and over again. So just feel free to jump in and correct me. I mean, I'll try my best, but it's kind of a running theme actually in fantasy books that nobody can really pronounce the names. And so we kind of just lean on each other. And sometimes the author has to actually put their pronunciation in the book. Like, you know, a character is teaching another character how to say their name just so that the reader knows. And why have we accepted this as a norm? Well, somebody has to do something about this. I mean, it's fantasy. So it makes sense that their names come from different places, right? Different backgrounds and all of that. So we learn that she is entering a quadrant at Baxia College, War College, right? And it's not known for being kind to anyone. And we know here that her mother is in command. So what do you have to say about that? Yeah, she's one of the big bosses in the story. And we quickly learn that, you know, Violet and her mom don't really get along, I find, from what I'm gathering here. So that's fair. Violet is probably seeing a therapist to get over all of her mommy issues. Well, she walks in actually on her sister fighting with her mom about having Violet enter the writer's quadrant. So her sister is like telling her mom off being like, what the heck are you doing? Like, you know, and then Violet internally in the book is saying like, I don't want this. It's like, I don't want any part of the writer's quadrant. Actually, I don't have a death wish. Yeah. So there's definitely a trend here. The mom has issues with all the kids. Then it's put up ever since the brother died, which we learned in a few pages. So yeah, so the big sister is trying to defend little sister who obviously doesn't feel like she's ready or cut out for this kind of, you know. Yeah, what can you, what can you glean from this already from like the sisterly relationship? She did say she hasn't seen her in three years. Yeah, and I can also tell that it's a very like motherly relationship between the older sister and the younger sister. I mean, at some point they do talk about how she was like braiding her hair. Yeah. You know, something that the mom I feel like would never do. Yeah, that's fair. And so I mean, mom probably has her own issues that she has to deal with. And I know that a lot of it can also stem from the dad who was a scribe. I know that Violet originally wanted to be a scribe and she spent a lot of time in the library with her dad. And then her dad died. So now I don't know if mom and dad were together when this all went down. But it seems like the mom really, really doesn't like. I mean, she does say I will not watch one of my children enter the scribe concert. So, you know, they should have talked about this before having kids. Like they should have been on the same page in terms of what they wanted for the children's future. She's a pretty like ruthless kind of demeanor, the mom, right? She doesn't have a lot of, she doesn't share a lot of feelings in the scene. You don't see her have anything other than just like kind of go after it. This is what you got to do. And this is what I said. And, you know, they're like, dad wouldn't want this. Well, like, I love your father, but he's dead. I doubt he wants much to say like. And that's fucked. Like, not, not cool. Like, I don't know if he died a few years ago, but too soon. Like you don't make a comment like that about someone's dad. And this tells me that I will hate, um, sorry. I think it's her last name, right? I won't like her. Um, I feel like at some point she's may come around. She may do something that will, you know, bring her whole character arch, um, all the way and maybe she'll, she'll save her daughter one day. Who knows? Who knows? But I do think that it's interesting. We've, we've heard about her in a few ways. Like she couldn't carry her backpack like Mira's like, no, but she's too weak, right? And there's a whole scene about like, no, you're just fragile, right? And there was something around a sickness that took her mom over when her mother was pregnant with Violet. And now she's like this fragile. She's like a fragile body, right? And the mom does say, you know, that violet deals with more pain before lunch than Mira does in an entire week. So that we do get these hints from now about, okay, Violet is actually actually weaker. Like this is not just like, oh, she's a small kid, like, you know, 20 year old. She's, she's actually weaker, more frail. She has something. We don't know what yet. And maybe that's what gives her the, um, you know, to, even though she doesn't want to be a scribe, she's going to stick with it and she's going to go to the end, hopefully. Um, because I would hate to see her die, like in chapter two. I mean, I don't want to read that book where like, you know, that you're getting introduced to a character in the next thing, you know, it's like, oh, she's dead. Well, I mean, cool. Um, okay, we're, we're in this though. We're going to finish this regardless of what happens. Um, so then we, we hear about something for the first time. So tell me what your thoughts are. We hear that, you know, it says mom's storm wielding signet power that she channels through her dragon aims there. So what, what are you like, what did you think when you read that? Well, the first thought I had was she can be cast as stormy next man. Um, whenever the next X man comes around, but out of all the powers, you know, storms pretty cool. I, I like that I appreciate it. Um, I think probably comes in handy at war. So she has a power. She has a power. That's right. That only is possible because she has a dragon because she's bonded with, with her dragon here. Yeah, I remember some things. Um, okay. So she's basically kind of saying like, okay, if I like go on and get into this quadrant and I'm not going to be able to talk to you for like three years and violet won't even notice to be. Yeah, she says like a knowledge. I'm not going to acknowledge you for three years. Yeah, not that it matters. She's mom isn't really much of a motherly figure anyway. No. Okay. So then, you know, she leaves this room and mirrors just like she's batshit crazy. Like her mom is nuts. And so she then, you know, goes to support her and help her through her pack and her boots like what was your thinking in the scene when, you know, she's taking care of her right before she goes into the parapet. Well, I mean, big sister's just trying her best to make sure that her sister has a chance at getting through this thing here. But we know deep inside that violet just doesn't want to do this. She really wants to be a scribe, but she's only going to do it almost, I think, to prove her mom wrong or just everybody wrong that, you know, she's more than capable of doing something like this and we'll see if she dies trying. Okay. So, um, we also see her get rid of books. She's very like fond of these books her dad's given her right. She was trying to be a scribe and live in the archives with all the books. So she has to get rid of some books. There was something around that and mirror just lets her keep the one book that's around killing people. So she's like, fine, you can keep that one. And then after that, we essentially get the gear on, right? So this is the first time we see her getting into gear, which becomes a pretty consistent theme is the writer's leathers and the tight fitting clothes so that it doesn't catch the wind when they're riding dragons. And so it's all black. It's all leathery. It's all tight everywhere. And she gives her something special, like a special kind of armor. It's all very BDSM. What was it? Well, there's going to be sex in this book at some point, a lot of it. And I just feel like they're just setting up the scene. They want the characters to look a certain way. Yeah, but there's a reason, right? You can't be wearing a flowy dress up on top of your dragon and expect the wind not to like literally sail you away. I feel like Daenerys from Game of Thrones. At some point was wearing something flowy on her dragon. I mean, that's a good point, but that's a whole different story. So in this one, she does say that she gives her some special armor that actually has been made from her dragon scales. Like when the dragon was shedding those scales and that feels like cheating to me. Does it? Right? Cause does anyone else have access to dragon scales? Well, if anyone else has an older sibling that is a writer, why couldn't they also get that support? Yeah, for a point. Yeah, you can kind of come in as ready as you can be, right? It's like get your best gear on and those scales are giant, but she knows. She says she knows a guy who can turn small things smaller and some things much, much bigger. Unnecessary, honestly, this is the first, the first time I think we get a hint of how I guess not, I don't say desperate, but how violet and her sister may be sharing the same mind in terms of, I don't know where I'm going with this. I mean, really, it's really just, I mean, at the end of the day, they're starting to like play on the fact that they can chat about these things and they can be, they can talk about, you know, sexual things, roll your eyes. Me or me has always been more vocal about her men than I have been, right? All about two of them. She's had two, two men in her life before. So she's read the codex. We understand the codex is like the laws, right? Like the rules they abide by as a writer in the writer's quadrant. So there is, there is that I really, I don't know if there's been written and I think it'd be really need to get like a codex book actually published that you could just have and learn all the rules of the writer's. I'm not reading that. Nope. That'd be funny though. Okay. So then we know that any cadet can actually kill anyone else inside of the writer's quadrant because it's going to improve their odds of bonding with the dragon because there's less dragons than there are writers. So there is that new kind of like, okay, like literally it's not just war that can kill you. It's the other cadets. It's very cutthroat. And I feel like all these kids, you know, whether they were, whether they volunteered or they were sent here as punishment, they use, they all have a death wish. There's no other reason why you'd want to do this. You either get killed by somebody from your own, you know, squad or an enemy or a dragon. Yeah. But you then, if you survive, you get to ride a bad ass dragon. Yeah. Until you go to war and then potentially die. I mean, every day you're going to wake up like, Oh, today may be my last day, but you're on a drag. Listen, there are other quadrants, right? There's infantry and those people also have to go to war, but they don't have a dragon that they get to ride and be in the sky with, right? So you, at the end of the day, do have maybe better survival rate, but you are more necessary in the front lines. Yeah. Let's talk about Dane. Yeah. Tell me, tell me your thoughts. So Mira is the one that tells Violet to go find Dane Aitos. Yeah. Yeah. So, so Dane seems to be like her, you know, lifelong friend. It immediately was thinking like, you know, gale and cat nets from the hunger game. Okay. Yeah. So this tells me that I feel like Dane and Violet will be involved in the left triangle and I change my mind. There's no dragons involved in the left triangle. That'll be someone else, which we'll talk about very, very soon. But yeah. So Dane seems to be someone who is currently, I think they mentioned, year two, Violet hasn't seen him for a while, but she has a thing for him. You know, she misses his soft brown eyes, you know, and so we all know that Violet's a horny person. So I think. Continue. Yeah. Well, I'm just saying, I feel like the first time she sees him, she's going to just want to do it. Well, I mean, maybe, but she does say she missed their friendship, right? And he's always been like his best, her best friend, the person that she can go to for anything is she hasn't had access to him because they can't communicate with anyone in the writer's quadrant for an entire year. So, you know, seeing him as kind of like that light in entering the writer's quadrant as well. And at least there's someone there that can kind of look out for her in some way or other. And, you know, Mira does say, you know, if you want to get laid, like you, you should 100%, just like stay to your year. We don't want anyone feeling like you slept your way to safety or anything like that. I mean, it wouldn't hurt though. Got it. Like it's rather the fittest. That's what it takes. Then just do it. Okay. So we also learn here that there are like six provinces, right, that have been sent from Navar that have been sent to this year's share of candidates and some volunteer like to, you know, be a part of this and some are sentenced as punishment, right? So most are conscripted and some are sent as punishment. So this is what we learned about the people entering the quadrant. And we know here that we have, you know, a few candidates that are coming through. So you're going to get it. You're getting to see a little bit of their goodbye, right? They're kind of going away. And we do see here that we're talking about separatists. So first time we get introduced to this concept in the book and these are, you know, they have a mark that starts at the top of the wrist and it has like a relic as part of being a part of the rebellion. It's like a first degree burn mark really is what it is, right? Wasn't it done by their dragons or did I get that wrong? So, yeah, it was done by the, it became apparent, it happened when the dragon of the general that like went to kill their parents, killed their parents and this like relic mark appeared. Okay. Yeah. And so this is the first time that we also meet Zaden Ryerson, Ryerson Ryerson and we are finally introduced to the third part of this love triangle because right away she is like just smitten completely by Zaden and it's going to be a love hate relationship because we also learn that Zaden's dad was, you know, part of the rebellion that was the leader of the rebellion. It was the leader of the rebellion. Yeah. That Violet's mom squashed. Exactly. And so we now know that anyone who was a part of the rebellion that had kids, those kids are now marked with a like a traitor, like a rebellion relic, which means all of them will have that Ryerson being, you know, the son of the leader of it all, but everyone else does, which means anytime you see a cadet or someone who is now a writer in the quadrant that has these markings on their arm, you're going to know, oh, that's, that's a separate kid kid. Yeah. And so should you, yeah, should you be careful around them? Right? Because I mean, obviously they're not there by choice. Yeah. I mean, unless they are at this point, but at first they, they weren't. So they're, they're going to be bitter. Yeah. And well, we know at least that they're there as punishment, right? So obviously the writer's quadrant is the quadrant that loses the most amount of, you know, people, you know, kids or 20 year olds are going to be conscripted. And we do know that Ryerson has risen in rank. So he's now a wing leader, which I don't know if you know yet too much about the ranks, but a wing leader is, you know, they're, they're the leader of that entire set of the wings. Yeah. And there's four of them. Right. So, so we know he's going to have some power over violet, for sure. And now at this point, they're all getting ready because they're going to start making their way to that's right. And we meet two more characters. We meet Rihanna on and short re in the future. And then Dylan, who are basically the president in front of her and behind her on this line, as they're heading up to the parapet to get on the parapet to cross and make it to the other side and become a cadet. So we meet Dylan, you know, he's been winning his entire life. He's super excited. He's like, can you believe it? And right away, I knew like within two lines, two sentences of reading about Dylan, I told myself, it's like, he will die very, very soon. He's just way overly enthusiastic and overly optimistic. So he's going to get hit with a dose of reality real soon and pavement when he falls off that parapet. Okay. And we do see that there is like, there's some sneers, like there's a guy behind that's like, you know, kind of like being joking and they're just being annoying. And then there's a very interesting moment where, you know, she's, you know, Violet's ready to go on and she notices that, you know, her sister had said, you got to change your boots. They have to have grip or you're going to just flip right off and it's getting rainy and wet. And Rihanna doesn't have grippy boots and she's like, give me your boot to trade with me. Yeah. Yeah. And at this point, I don't know if Violet is naive, if she's too kind or if she's just a good person, but she does trade with, with free. Yeah. Free for it. Yeah. And, you know, hoping that, that this will help her get through the parapet by what I was thinking was she should have actually traded with Dylan because he's the one that I think it's going to needed. Well, you know, thankfully, she traded with Rhee and Rhee and her, you know, are about to head to the parapet. And so first she, you know, is going to go in and she checks in. She's to give her a name at the start and then they know based on the names at the end, who didn't make it, right? To the end of the parapet. And she asks, she sees this tall wind-blown, black haired, dark, dark, dark brows, like man. And she says he's the most exquisite man I've ever seen. Yeah. Sorry. Dane days. I already forgot your name. Dane. Dane. No, it stays. Dane Aitos. Dane Aitos. Zaden has entered the picture, so you no longer have a chance with exquisite because of exquisite Zaden. Right. So Zaden, Ryerson, is they are actually checking names. And as soon as Rhee says, hey, you ready for this, Sorengeil? Ryerson also now is like, oh, I know who this is now, you know, there's some, there's some hate in the, in the look as well, of revenge. And I feel like that may come through when they finally. What? Get together? Yeah. What's that? Was that really happening? Yeah. Well, they will get together at some point. Okay. And then they go start getting through, through the parapet. And next thing, you know, poor Dylan. Yeah. Were you thoughts on that? You were like, called it? I called it for sure. So, you know, I don't know why it was necessary. I think they just wanted to add somebody who was likable, that, you know, for a whole five minutes was close to Violet, just a kind of show was, hey, this is, this is for real, right? Yeah. He is one of the many that are about to die. Okay. And, you know, she does kind of look at Ryerson and she's like, okay, are you going to kill me or what? Like kind of just make up your choice. Let's just decide this right now. Do I even have to go any further? Are you going to kill me right now? And he does say, why would I waste my energy killing you when the parapet will do it for me? And your turn. And she goes off to her parapet. So then we get into chapter two and she's on the parapet. Her mantra really is, I will not die today. Exactly. I think she's going to need that mantra every single day if she wants to make it through this whole process here. But she's very clear that, you know, she can't panic. She has to stay focused, you know, one step at a time. Don't look down. Just look at your feet when you're crossing this thing here and make sure you keep your balance. And then we meet a bit of a dick, Jack Barlow, God, what an insufferable prick, right? So I'm just, I'm hoping he dies sooner than later because I don't want to have to deal with his shit much, much longer. But, buddy, I guess he's trying to really prove himself. He's just trying to, I don't know, intimidate others, you know, that's competition. He literally just like knocks people out, like, on this parapet, just pushes them off into their death. Yeah. So he was definitely beat as a child, I think. And now he's just trying to take it out on the other cadets. Likely. Likely. And so he's kind of like, I'm coming after you, you know, he's like looking like he's going to basically kill everyone on this parapet. And Violet is on the parapet when he's about to join. So she's calming herself by actually reciting parts of books, right? History books, as she remembers. This is like the way that she calms down, but it's also a great view for us as a reader to get a little bit more insight, right, into what's happened. There's like a kingdom, right? There's been a war for 400 years, so you're starting to get some of the history without it feeling to like, you know, dull because you know that she's literally a step away from dying. Yeah. And if you've been at war for 400 years, I don't think it's called war anymore. I think it's just a norm, right? Like it's a fucking long time to be at war. It is a long time. So that's just life for them. Yeah. So, you know, she's reciting this to herself and Jack just keeps throwing people off this parapet and he's like, you're next to her in jail, I'm coming for you. So basically at this point, you know, Jack gets to the end, like she's getting to the end and he's like, trying to chase like, almost running at the end to try to get you, you know, it's like, I'm going to help. I'm going to kill you. I'm going to like, come for you like, and she's just like, the fuck you will, like, I'm getting to this finish line, right? So, you know, she gets back to the end as she gets into the stone, like the little stone wall on both sides. So she's kind of getting to safety now. And Jack's like, oh, you think you're going to be safe in there? And she actually grabs a dagger from one of her sheets and holds it right against his balls. Yeah. And I thought she should have just gone for it at that point, right? Like it's one of those things where, you know, you're going to regret it later. Just get it over with, just kill the guy, just do what you got to do to survive. Yeah. Yeah. Exactly. And so at this point where, you know, Jack is kind of like, held just to her mercy and she decides to let him go, you know, and at the end of the day, you know, the writers on the other side are like, you know, what actually cadet, Sorengel is a cadet, because she's actually standing on the part fact that she finished, but he's not. And the rules are against cadets killing each other, like, before they're, you know, put into their wings and all that. So at this point, she could have, she could have definitely just killed him. Absolutely. Unfortunately, she doesn't. And so I'm sure at some point, she'll have the chance to do it. We always have an enemy now, you know? Yeah. Well, I mean, I think there's more than one enemy at this point, right? So you've got Zaden and we'll become a lover of very soon. I think the mom's an enemy at this point too, because I just don't like her. Then we have this Jack character as well. And to be honest, I think dragons are enemies until we have a chance for Violet to bond with one of them. Yeah. And so we have at the beginning of every chapter, there's like a little blurb around, you know, around the dragons or around something in the book in the story, which I think is also another really fun way of them sharing information. So because, you know, right, she's always loved books. There's these different books like a field guide to dragonkind and there's little moments that you can learn. Yeah. Sure. And eventually there's things from different areas that come up, but those are some of the ones that are coming out so far that I think you've been, you've been highlighting because you've been liking. Yeah. Cause I, I, I agree. I kind of like the description of the dragons and, you know, they talk about the blue dagger tails. So like I knew that at some point I was going to come in, um, into the story, right? Because it wiles what they talk about blue dragons specifically. Yeah. And then, uh, we're going to learn about that real, real soon. Um, so, you know, we basically, everyone comes in and once, you know, that's done, they're all in, she's kind of like, okay, still early, probably still around like nine in the morning. And you know, there's not many cadets yet that have come in. So there's all a waiting period while everybody else crosses the parapet. So now everyone's just kind of like celebrating. They made it. And then on the other side. Yeah. So I mean, thankfully, uh, two out of the three made it through. So we know that. And violet made it. Exactly. And press them. He's doing. Um, and so then we come across Dane. So you know, he, she basically is walking in a tall, you know, figure in a pristine black uniform steps out of the crowd charging towards us. And he's like violet strong hands catch my elbows to study me. And he's kind of like right there, right in front of her finally. I know. And I think he immediately, um, goes into that like best friend, big brother sort of figure, right? Because at this point, violet is just ready to throw up everywhere. And that almost seems like a, the sort of a hallmark movie as well. It's like, you know, this girl hasn't seen her lover for three years, you know, she bumps into him in the street. Um, and she wants to throw up all over him. Yeah. And she says, you know, it has an easy going smile, started many of her fantasies and Dan echoes went from attractive to cute and cute to gorgeous in this last year, but he's not exquisite. No, he's not exquisite. You're right. Um, and yeah, she's about to vomit, which, um, kind of becomes like a theme, I would say. And, uh, I mean, sort of, there's a lot of high impact stuff, you know, so think about the last time you worked out incredibly intensely. Did you not want to throw up? Uh, yeah. Yeah. Exactly. So that's the kind of feeling, right? So, you know, she's kind of like, I'm going to be sick, right? And Rhee's kind of like, who, who are you, you know, like, because she now feels like she, this is her friend and who's his random guy, right? And it's like, and she clarifies. I don't know. He's one of my best friends. Like we can trust him, right? And we don't, I'm known as, we were five and six. So they've had history. Big time. Yeah. And they traveled together, right? So it was, you know, her mother and his dad that were stationed together at different areas. And so they've kind of traveled together. They've gone to know each other. And right now, you know, Rhee is the only other person there she trusts because they share her boot. Plot twist. Are they siblings? I can't answer. You can, you can just tell me. Oh, no. They're not siblings. They are not siblings. Okay. All right. I'm just saying if, if her mom and her, his dad were stationed together and she doesn't like her ex-husband, maybe, maybe, um, if I didn't, and Dana are siblings. No, they're definitely not. And he's, you find out that he's actually the leader for the second squad flame section second wing. So he's not, you know, in, he's not in the fourth wing, which is in the name of the title, but he's in the second wing and he is a section leader, which, um, or squad leader. So, you know, he can actually be the one that supports her, which is why Miras had go find Dane. Yeah. Exactly. Right. So, so we know that, you know, she stays with them. She'll have some sort of protection. Right. Exactly. And he makes sure of that. He makes sure to tell Reed to go tell the person that's selecting people, hey, make sure both of you get put into my squad, my, my squad. But that was not his intention. He actually wanted to sneak violet, um, over to, to the scribe, um, building for, for a lack of a better term. Right. And violet was actually not very happy, um, about that. Cause I mean, at this point, she, she's like, Hey, listen, I, I've proven myself, um, up until now, you know, I, I made it through that first challenge. And, and I think, um, I can do this cause I'm not, I'm not weak. Like everybody thinks I am. And, and I know we know Dane is obviously he's in love with, with violet. He just wants to keep her alive. He wants to protect her as much as he can, of course, you know, and, uh, violet, just put her foot down. She says, no, I am not going to go, uh, with the scribes. I mean, you're to stay. What are your thoughts on that? I mean, at this point, good for her. I mean, if that's what she really wants to do, she's got something to prove, um, thing, thing go for it. Right. Cause I feel like if she went to the scribe, um, section, this book would end right about now. Okay. Pretty, pretty accurate. So at this point, you know, they, she flirts with him a little bit, right? So a little bit of some flirt going on as they're going out. And then kind of that flirt turns to stone when, uh, she realizes he's trying to like actually sneak her out to the scratch quadrant. And so once those final cadets come in, now the, the, the could be writers over on the other end come in Zaden being one of them, right? So Zaden comes in and now it's like, okay, we're about to start. We're about to get everybody into where they need to be, right? So 67 people died trying to get to the other side of that parapet. 67 falls, um, died. That's right.
